Designed for those who are currently involved in community organizing and racial justice efforts, this cohort will engage deeply with adrienne maree brown’s Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds. Core concepts from the book paired with contextual knowledge of activism in Houston will be used to reimagine community organizing in ways that dispel notions of hierarchical leadership models, large-scale strategic planning, and linear ideas of change. Participants will consider approaches to organizing in our city that are instead premised upon cultivation of authentic relationships as well as models of interdependence and continual adaptation. Our aim is to conceive together a more expansive, thorough understanding of what it means to engage in holistic approaches to community organizing that are both personally and collectively transformative and that lead to the creation of more equitable, justice-driven communities.
